You may have heard of green fingers – this refers to a person having a flair and knack for gardening. And logically, you are aware of the environmental issues plaguing the world. You are convinced that you should do something for the sake of the environment, but may not be sure where to begin.

Here is one of the best options you can consider, that can promise you job satisfaction – look for green jobs. Such jobs, also called green-collar jobs have been defined by the United Nations Environment Program, as “work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development (R&D), administrative, and service activities that contribute(s) substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality. Specifically, but not exclusively, this includes jobs that help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high efficiency strategies; de-carbonize the economy; and minimize or altogether avoid generation of all forms of waste and pollution.” Look up the official agenda announced through the Green Job Initiative.

In the UK there are plenty of sources for you to look for green jobs and other environment-related jobs. Here are a select few.

Latest environment jobs in Sustainability, Renewable Energy, Environmental Management and Conservation

Specialist green jobs, green careers and green employment website

Home of Renewable Energy jobs, Wind Energy jobs, Environmental jobs and Sustainability jobs from the UK’s top Employers

Jobs for environmental professionals

So even if you do not have green fingers, work on improving your “green nerve”, shall we say, by establishing yourself on your green job. The Earth needs you!

The UK Government in early April launched a new National Careers Service.

This service promises to offer work advice and learning information to people across age groups. Using a combination of highly-trained advisers and an interactive website, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills hopes to make careers advice more usable and meaningful.

According to estimates, this service can meet the requirement to handle up to a million telephonic advice sessions annually, besides several million online sessions. This will mean that face-to-face guidance will be provided at several community locations, where the candidate can get information specific to the local labour market.

Among the website tools are a CV Builder, a Skills Health Check, Action Plan tool and Learner Record. If you become an online user, you will be able to open a “Lifelong Learning Account”.

So you have the ‘right’ degree in hand. What next? Unless specifically stated many companies prefer candidates who have some work experience related to the job applied for. To every fresh graduate, the question is always at the tip of the tongue to ask, unless I get a job, how will I get work experience? Work experience can also help a lot if you are yet to decide on a career choice.

Thankfully there are a few establishments who offer work experience placements to fresh, raw graduates. Work experience placements also called internships, and are usually paid positions. It is also possible for you to set aside your ambitions of immediate income and instead work as a volunteer in a suitable organization.

Look up some useful tips on work experience.

The BBC is a vast organization, and offers work experience placements in a score specializations. You can search and apply for these opportunities here.

You will find this event quite useful – visit the National Work Placement Exhibition at NEC Birmingham on 27 Oct 2011.
